On May 25, 2020 we witnessed a murder and heard cries to end systemic racism in the criminal legal system. That day, a social movement erupted across the nation. The eyes of many opened to a stark reality that Black and Brown people live with every day, racism thrives in our criminal legal system. Diverse communities stood side by side to rail against a system that silences, dehumanizes, and over-incarcerates Brown and Black people. Angelenos spoke up, we can never again continue with business as usual; systemic racism must be called out and stopped.
The demand for reform in our criminal legal system is not new. As a community we realized fear-mongering led to caging children for behaviors they exhibited, in large part, because their brains were not fully developed. Our shame at following fear, not science, changed the juvenile justice system. We know the system is broken and we can fix it. ....

Los Angeles Board of Supervisors Hires a Reform-Minded New Head of LA County Probation


LA county is “moving away from a system of punishment to one of prevention, mental health resources, and youth development,” the philanthropic leaders wrote. This ongoing transformation “now comes to a critical juncture the selection of the next Los Angeles County Chief Probation Officer.”
With all this in mind, on the surface it was a surprise that the board chose someone with Gonzales’ background that, other than his five year stint at San Diego Probation, has been primarily focused on the world of policing.   After starting in the police reserves, he became a full time officer for San Diego Police Department in 1979, rising through the department ranks to the rank of assistant chief of police in 2001. In 2004, Gonzales became the Chief of Police for National City, then was the appointed as the Chief Investigator for the San Diego District Attorney’s Office in 2013. ....
