Thousands of state employees who have been working from home for more than a year won t return to the office any earlier than July 12.
Because the state has reached its 55% vaccination rate goal, many businesses can return to in-person work May 24, Cheryl Schmittdiel, director at the Office of State Employer, confirmed in an email Monday to state employees.
But that May 24 date will not affect state workers, who will hold to a plan that extends remote work through at least July 12 as staff bring workplaces up to the latest CDC and MIOSHA standards, the email said. ....

State employees will return to offices on July 12

LANSING – Thousands of state workers are returning to the office July 12, well over a year after they were sent to work from home because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Although it is anticipated in-person work may be allowed starting May 24, our previously announced date of July 12 has not changed,” Cheryl Schmittdiel, acting director of the Office of the State Employer, wrote in a letter to state employees Monday. “Agency and DTMB staff are working to ensure workplaces meet the latest CDC and MIOSHA standards and your agency is also updating its return-to-work plan.”
Michigan has tied loosening coronavirus restrictions to vaccination rates, and May 10 marked the first milestone. Since more than 55% of eligible Michiganders have received at least one dose, businesses are allowed to resume in-person work starting May 24. ....

As Michigan ramps up vaccine distribution, more employers and workers are preparing to return to in-person office work in some form. To support this process, the State has established the new Return-to-Office Workgroup consisting of business, labor, and public health experts to provide Gov. Whitmer with concise recommendations that will be used to inform MDHHS orders and MIOSHA rules as well as standards and best practices for employers to use in planning their own phased reopening. ....

Michigan’s emergency rules banning office work – except when remote work isn’t “feasible” – will likely be extended six months to October, state leaders say.
But a new workgroup of state, business and health officials is meeting to sort out how Michigan can phase in its return to offices.
Vaccination rates will likely play a larger role than COVID-19 rates when it comes to deciding how and when to reopen offices to all workers, said Sean Egan, director of Michigan COVID-19 workplace safety. ....

The Zeeland headquarters of Gentex Corp. remains empty as employees for the automotive and aerospace industry supplier continue working from home because of the Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration s prohibition on in-person office work if it can be feasibly done from home.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer s administration has formed a workgroup of government, business and labor leaders to make recommendations for allowing workers to return to office buildings after a year of remote work due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The emergency workplace rules the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration put in place in October during the fall surge in COVID-19 cases expires April 14, adding pressure on the workgroup to come up with recommendations on how to regulate office work for the next six months. ....
