Agopsowicz was arrested almost immediately for breaching court orders not to consume alcohol and drugs, after police watched him down two beers then smoke crack cocaine in a glass pipe outside 844 Johnson St., a supportive-housing facility.
At his bail hearing the next day, Victoria provincial court Judge Ted Gouge made it clear he believed Agopsowicz was a public danger and should be kept in hospital.
“Please convey to Andrew Agopsowicz’s physicians that I think the decision to discharge him from hospital was a mistake and we can only hope it does not have tragic consequences,” said Gouge.
Agopsowicz was found dead of a suspected drug overdose at 2 a.m. on April 29, less than 12 hours after his release from custody. ....

Five suspects in €58,000 romance fraud case released on bail

Five people accused of having tricked an elderly woman into paying them thousands of euro as part of a romance fraud have been granted bail.
The five accused – former footballer Sunday Eboh, Alexandra Pace, Collins Eguavoen, Marvis Iyeke and Tony Ogbonna – were arrested in February after police discovered that a woman had been tricked into sending €58,000 in various transactions to somebody she had met online.
The woman was ostensibly sending the money to a US soldier deployed in Afghanistan. But investigators discovered that the money was being deposited in local bank accounts and eventually arrested the five suspects.
Two further suspects were later also arrested in connection with the case. ....

Five persons accused in Malta s first romance fraud case have been released on bail, nearly three months after being charged.
They were released against a deposit of €4,000 and a personal guarantee of €16,000. They were also ordered to observe a curfew and sign a bail book every day.
Prominent retired local footballer Sunday Eboh, Maltese national Alexandra Pace, Nigerian nationals Collins Eguavoen, Marvis Iyeke and Tony Ogbonna had been arrested in February. ....

One of six suspects in romance fraud scam granted bail

A suspect fraudster allegedly involved in a group scam that tricked a woman into transferring some €58,000 to a bogus US soldier stationed in Afghanistan has been granted bail.
Tony Anuforo, a 34-year-old Nigerian national, was arraigned in February alongside three co-nationals and one Maltese woman as the suspects behind the swindle, whereby the unsuspecting victim was first lured into a fake virtual relationship with a fictitious soldier who told her he would travel to Malta upon deployment.
As the virtual relationship progressed, the woman transferred small sums of money to the man, by means of a series of local bank transactions, totalling some €58,000. ....
