Wilson leads second quarter campaign financing for mayoral candidates | Alexandria Times

Incumbent Mayor Justin Wilson raised $78,518 in overall contributions during the second quarter fundraising period of April 1 to May 27, 2021, outraising his opponent, former Mayor Allison Silberberg, who received $61,324 in the same period, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.
Tuesday was the final deadline for local candidates to file second quarter mandatory finance reports with the Virginia Department of Elections. The Times looked at data on both the VDE and Virginia Public Access Project websites, the latter of which presents the same information in a more user-friendly format.
Wilson’s balance from the last reporting period started at $92,060. Between the $90,740 he raised in the first quarter and his second quarter fundraising, Wilson has an overall donation receipt of $170,578. ....

Candidate profile: Justin Wilson emphasizes pandemic recovery, infrastructure in re-election campaign | Alexandria Times

Justin Wilson would be the first to tell you that his term as mayor has not gone as planned.
When Wilson was elected in 2018, after defeating former Mayor Allison Silberberg in the 2018 Democratic primary by 1,259 votes, he did so assuming that the biggest challenge he would have to face was the planned shutdown of the city’s Metro stations in summer 2019.
“I think the good news is we handled the adversity of that well,” Wilson said. “… All of that was great, but then, obviously, there’s been a couple other things that have happened in the last two and a half years.” ....

Candidate profile: Canek Aguirre kicks off re-election campaign | Alexandria Times

Canek Aguirre said he is running for a second term on Alexandria’s City Council to continue amplifying voices that aren’t always heard.
Aguirre said he is passionate about communication and language access for all of Alexandria’s communities. With another term, he said he could assist with the city’s COVID-19 recovery and continue to help marginalized communities, such as the city’s Hispanic community, access city resources.
“It’s not big and flashy, but I don’t think I’m here necessarily to do big and flashy,” Aguirre said. “What I really want to do is make government work better.” ....

Candidate profile: Amy Jackson gears up for re-election bid | Alexandria Times

Amy Jackson, a current member of City Council and longtime educator in Northern Virginia, kickstarted her council re-election campaign on Feb. 3, her birthday.
It was a personal way for Jackson to launch her campaign at a time when knocking on doors and meeting community members at fundraisers are no longer part of running a campaign. It was also apt for a candidate who was raised in Alexandria and pitches herself as a “voice of the people.”
“We have an inclusive city that’s always been home to me,” Jackson said. “I want to continue to always find a path to make sure that people feel welcome and that people feel seen. I want everybody here feeling seen.” ....
