A growing list of the most prominent civil rights locations and landmarks in America just took a seat in Rock Hill.
The former McCrory s Five & Dime site on Main Street is now a part of the African American Civil Rights Network. That listing began in 2017 and is operated by the National Park Service. It includes almost 60 listings.
Gladys Robinson, chairwoman of the city African-American Cultural Resources Advisory Committee, said the designation is exciting and significant. The National Park Service, she said, is able to continue to promote research and history of important places. ....

Mar. 2 The National Park Service has added four South Carolina resources to the African American Civil Rights Network the first additions to the Network for the state.
They are Columbia s Waverly Historic District and Harden Street Substation, St. George Rosenwald School in Dorchester County and the South Carolina Equalization Schools website. Their inclusion in the Civil Rights Network federally solidifies their significance to the civil rights movement.
The African American Civil Rights Network Act of 2017 established within the National Park Service was created by Congress to recognize and commemorate the contributions of the civil rights movement, acknowledge the sacrifices of those who fought for racial equality, desegregation and against discrimination as well as federally recognize their historical releva ....
