LINCOLN The public was able to get their questions about vaccines and masking answered during a virtual town hall meeting on Wednesday.

Community Foundation awards $106K in new grants | News, Sports, Jobs

Alcona Historical Society received a $2,972 Community Impact Grant for the Sprucing Up Bailey School project.
ALPENA The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan recently awarded a new round of community grants covering a four-county area that includes Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties.
The CFNEM Board of Trustees recently approved 46 new grants totaling $106,515. Of that amount, $84,289 was awarded in Community Impact Grants, and $22,226 was awarded in grants from the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council.
New Community Impact Grants are:
¯ Alcona Community Schools $1,000 for the Alcona Wrestling program;
¯ Alcona Community Schools $3,000 for the Elementary School Outdoor Classroom;
¯ Alcona County Commission on Aging $1,500 for the Alcona County Commission on Aging Technology Loan Center; ....

ALPENA When Presque Isle County 911 Coordinator Renee Szymanski got the email on Jan. 4 saying a new Verizon cell tower had been installed, she couldn’t wait to tell her coworkers.
“I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, you guys. This is so exciting. We have a new tower that’s up, ” said Szymanski, reporting, with a sigh of relief, that cell phone coverage is looking up in Northeast Michigan. ....

LINCOLN Plans for a multimillion-dollar development designed to meet the needs of Alcona County residents is in the works in Lincoln.
The proposed project would include a three-story, 45,000-square-foot apartment complex with 45 units, a 47,000-square-foot community center, and a 4,000-square-foot farmers market pavilion.
The project, spearheaded by the Alcona County Commission on Aging, could cost up to $25 million and would be located north of the Alcona Health Center’s Lincoln office and in front of Alcona Elementary School. ....

HARRISVILLE Toni Scott and her son not long ago went a whole year without the internet at her rural home near Harrisville.
She’d tried internet access through a satellite company, but “it was super sketchy,” Scott, 45, said. “It was in and out all the time, and it just wasn’t worth the high cost I was paying.” ....
