New York Teen Becomes First Black Valedictorian At Albany High School

In today s edition of Rooting For Everybody Black,
Onovu Otitigbe-Dangerfield has made history at Albany High School in New York. With a nearly perfect academic record, Otitigbe-Dangerfield has become the school s first Black valedictorian. To put this all in perspective. the school has been open for more than 150 years.
As wild as it sounds, the graduating senior is as well known for endeavors outside of the classroom as she is known for endeavors inside the classroom. Otitigbe-Dangerfield is the president of the school s key club and editor-in-chief of the school s newspaper. Above all else, she has a strong passion for engineering and robotics. Winning her first robotics competition at just three years old, the New York native has had to break down barriers as she ascends in a field dominated by white men. Her persistence and determination earned her the position of president in the school s robotic team. ....

Crookston man to replace long-time Albany High School principal Tim Wege

Eric Bubna will be the new high school principal at Albany Area Schools.
Bubna resigned after seven years as Crookston High School principal; the Crookston School Board scheduled a special meeting Monday morning to accept Bubna’s resignation, according to the Crookston Times. Bubna will finish out the 2020-21 school year at Crookston High School.
Bubna will replace Tim Wege, who is retiring after 19 years as Albany High School s prinicipal and serving in the school district since 1989. The Albany school board approved his resignation at its Jan. 6 meeting, effective June 30.
Bubna and his wife, Kaia, a kindergarten teacher until the conclusion of the 2019-20 school year, and their children will be moving closer to family in the Twin Cities. ....

Schools move forward with spring musicals, adjust art, music and PE classes

Carter Minor bounced his shoulders up and down to the beat of “Keep on Rollin” during a recent musical rehearsal.
The New Albany High School sophomore was recently cast in his high school’s production of Smokey Joe’s Café – a spring musical that he didn’t think would even happen because of COVID-19.
“I really enjoy doing musicals and I’m happy they found a way to do it,” Minor said. “It means there’s some normalcy with what’s going on.”
Everything from school performing arts to classes such as physical education, music and art have been altered because of the pandemic. But as the saying goes, the show (or class in many cases) must go on, said several educators. ....
