Hoping someone steps up for July 4 parade | News, Sports, Jobs

We understand the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce’s concerns.
Just about every organization these days seems to have more to do and fewer and fewer people to do it. That’s why the Chamber says it can’t maintain its leadership role in organizing Alpena’s July 4 parade.
We understand the Chamber’s worries, but reporter Steve Schulwitz’s story last week saying the Chamber needs someone new to step up to the plate still concerns us. Chamber President Adam Poll told Schulwitz he couldn’t guarantee a 2022 parade would happen if no one else stepped up.
Northeast Michigan knows how to do every holiday. The downtown Christmas tree is beautiful, our kids turn out great as ghouls and goblins every Halloween. ....

Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce President Adam Poll, left, and director of events Alisha Bouchard, show off bracelets that are being sold to raise money for this year’s Fourth of July fireworks show. The chamber is also planning the annual Independence Day parade, but is seeking another group or business to help, and take over the responsibility next year.
ALPENA After not having a parade on Independence Day last summer, the odds are good one will stream through Alpena on July 4.
The future of the parade beyond that is unclear.
For years, the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce has organized and planned the parade, but as the number of volunteers and staff have dwindled, it’s become harder to do, and still fulfill duties to its members. ....

Alpena DDA to celebrate Small Business Showcase | News, Sports, Jobs

Traveling Ladders is one of the businesses participating in next week’s Small Business Showcase.
ALPENA – In honor of National Small Business Week, the Alpena Downtown Development Authority is hosting a new event, the Small Business Showcase. The Small Business Showcase is a week-long event meant to celebrate and recognize small businesses in downtown Alpena that starts Sunday and ends with a culminating afternoon of sales from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 8.
“When people think of downtown, they often immediately think of all the cute and welcoming storefronts and restaurants where they shop and dine, and downtown is made up of so many more small businesses that don’t fit into the category of traditional retail,” said Kingsli Kraft, marketing and outreach coordinator at the Alpena DDA. “Downtown is home to over 170 small businesses of all types photography studios, hair salons, chiropractor’s offices, nonprofits, lawyer’s offices, financial services, ....

Shelly Katto points recently to a chalkboard in her Alpena Airbnb home signed by a group of nurses who found temporary housing there.
ALPENA The use of tax incentives, zoning changes, policy revisions, and the creative use of current structures still haven’t kept up with a spiking demand for housing in Northeast Michigan.
Big demand and too little supply, rising construction costs, and limited construction workers in part because of the coronavirus pandemic caused the region’s housing shortage, The News learned after weeks of research and interviews with homebuyers, sellers, and real estate and economic development officials. The shortage means people who want to move to or within Alpena often have to wait months before they can land a home. ....

A pile of rubble was all that was left standing of the former Alpena Catholic Central High School building on Tuesday afternoon. Demolition on the building began last week in preparation for a single story office building to be constructed and leased to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The former high school’s gymnasium will become the new home for the Alpena Boys and Girls Club.
ALPENA The COVID-19 pandemic was expected to throw a monkey wrench in local development.
Thus far however, it has had little impact on projects planned before the pandemic and developers are considering future projects in the area. ....
