ALPENA The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education during a special board meeting on Wednesday agreed to pay MacArthur Construction $442,200 to complete site work at Ella White Elementary School this summer. “This would include all the excavation backfill, compaction of all the soils for the building addition for the new parking lots, sidewalks, playground areas, and all of that type of work,” Wolgast Corp. Project Manager Luke Gerhart said. The site work is part of the district’s planned renovations for the elementary school this summer, which include a new roof, a secure entryway and office area, and new boilers and associated plumbing upgrades. ....

Apr 19, 2021 ∫ The Alpena Community College Board of Trustees approved the purchase of 10 ThinkPad laptop computers in the amount of $20,250 from Lenovo which will be used during TRiO Talent Search summer camps. The purchase was made using TRiO Talent Search funds. During the five-day summer camp, students will learn the fundamentals of game design through the development and planning of game maps, character creation, Java coding, using programming logic and animation, with the end result of creating and publishing a game on the site platform. The college received three bids for the computer purchase, but college officials did not recommend the lowest bid because it did not meet specifications. ....

ALPENA A newly proposed project based learning course Perspectives of Democracy will go before the Alpena Public Schools Board of Education for approval on Monday. The board’s Curriculum and Technology Committee on Tuesday recommended the proposed course move to the board for approval after hearing from two teachers who will instruct the class as well as the administrators helping to develop the course. ....

ALPENA Thunder Bay Junior High School and Alpena High School students had mixed feelings about heading back to the classroom four days a week. Monday marked the first time all middle and high school students were allowed in their respective schools at the same time this year. Until Monday, middle and high school students were split into two cohorts a green and a white cohort with each cohort attending school two days a week and utilizing Wednesdays as a remote learning day. ....
