A chorus of Long Beach officials this week joined a wave of community blowback against racist vandalism of a statue of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. over the holiday weekend and asked for stepped-up surveillance of the area.
Police responded to a report of a black swastika spray-painted onto the statue of the civil rights leader in the city’s eponymous park about 3:15 p.m. Friday. A city cleaning crew removed the graffiti that day, said Allison Gallagher, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department. ....

Car crashes into tree, fence, garage in South Wrigley, police say • Long Beach Post News

Long Beach police spokesperson Allison Gallagher said the crash happened at about 3:41 p.m. at a home on the corner of Oregon Avenue and Burnett Street.
A neighbor who did not give her name said she didn’t see the crash but heard it from inside her home.
“It sounded horrible, an awful crunch,” she said.
The Long Beach Fire Department transported the driver to a local hospital for minor injuries, police said. There were no other injuries.
Police did not say whether any drugs, alcohol or distracted driving were factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing. ....

Long Beach police are investigating as a hate crime the vandalism of a statue of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., which was defaced by spray-painted graffiti, a police representative said Monday.
Allison Gallagher, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department, said the graffiti was not being described because of the ongoing investigation, but a photo on social media showed a black swastika spray-painted on the front of the statue. No information about any suspect is available, she said.
