Damage to broadband cabinets, telephone poles and overhead wires across Cumbria can now be reported to Openreach using precise locations from what3words.
What3words grids the whole Earth into three metre squares, with each square given unique words to make it easier to pinpoint an exact location.
For example, Carlisle Castle is recorded as ‘from.copies.ending’, Scafell Pike is ‘weeds.skirting.fields’, Ullswater is ‘curl.spelling.shrubbery’, Honister Pass is ‘faded.remission.film’ and Sellafield is ‘presented.reliving.gender’.
Reporting the exact location of damage to Openreach’s nationwide phone and broadband network can sometimes prove difficult, particularly if the damage is in a rural or remote location or situated between villages or local landmarks, the firm said and what3words will help pinpoint locations. ....

A hotel near Ullswater is on the market for £950,000.
Brantwood Country House Hotel in Stainton, has been owned by Richard and Niki Langley since 2007 and the pair want to move on and sell the business as a going concern.
The seven-bedroom hotel, in just over half an acre of landscaped grounds, is being marketed by Colliers International.
The Langleys have refurbished the 18th century former country residence since they bought it.
The bar has 45 covers and the venue also has a breakfast/meeting room with 30 covers and a restaurant with 70 covers.

Between £250 and £500 from the foundation s small grants fund have been handed out to three Cumbrian organisations with the aim to making the Lake District and Cumbria an inspirational example of sustainable development.
Successful recipients of the funds can put the money towards anything they choose so as long as it supports a prosperous local economy by giving visitors a world-class experience of the vibrant communities that come together to sustain the landscape, wildlife and heritage in the Lakes.

On Saturday August 7, the charity will host its first Bikes, Boats, Boots Challenge, which will include cycling, canoeing, and hiking.
