£1.9 million from Culture Recovery Fund for Cumbria

CULTURAL institutions up and down Cumbria have been awarded almost £2 million in the latest round of funding from the Government.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport announced on April 2 that more than 2,700 cultural and creative organisations would receive a share of £400 million, with £1.9 million going to Cumbria.
Among the beneficiaries was the Ullswater Steamers, which will receive £425,000 in the second round of funding.
The iconic attraction has been handed a lifeline by the funding, which will allow it to look ahead to spring and summer with plans to reopen and recover.
Mark Horton, Ullswater ‘Steamers’ General Manager, says: “I am delighted that Ullswater ‘Steamers’ have been recognised as being such a significant part of our regional and national culture and heritage. ....

Ullswater Yacht Club s first open event since 2019, the Daffodil Regatta is being held on Saturday and Sunday, May 22 & 23.
The event is traditionally the first one of the sailing season for the club and usually there are daffodils galore at the prize-giving as UYC joins in Ullswater s spring celebrations in praise of Wordsworth s favourite flower. This year the event has been postponed from its usual Aprll date.
Organisers can offer the usual excellent racing run by a top race team, sailing in beautiful surroundings, excellent hospitality and camping on site. but this year it will be too late for the new lambs on the fells and daffodils on the shore. ....

JIM CRUMLEY: No osprey, yet, but hopes are soaring as we start to spread our wings

There has been an uncharacteristically cautious approach to the annual ritual of seeing my first osprey of spring.
It’s in the spirit of the age hence to be known as the doorstepocene (a sub-division of the anthropocene characterised by a fear of losing sight of the doorstep lest we transgress our allotted five-mile span and suffer a fate worse than appearing in Jennifer Arcuri’s diary).
I have form in the matter of osprey-watching, ranging from the Black Isle and Strathspey to Loch Awe and Galloway, to Balquhidder and a Borders loch whose name escapes me, to the Dighty and the English Lake District. ....

4,000 trees planted by volunteers and Another Way

4,000 trees planted by volunteers and Another Way
05/04/2021
Around 4,000 trees have been planted in four days by 80 volunteers and charity Another Way across three sites in Cumbria.
Funded by the Tree Council, via a £1m fund from Network Rail and support from Ullswater Catchment Management CIC, the Another Way team and volunteers planted trees and hedgerows including oak, rowan, blackthorn, hawthorn, hazel, dog rose, bird cherry, crab apple and holly in Matterdale and Watermillock.
Amy Bray, 18, founder of Another Way, said: ‘This project is especially important as it is interconnecting existing woodlands with hedgerows.
“While climate change is an extremely threatening issue, it is only the third worst threat to our planet, the first being biodiversity and habitat loss. Increasing wood cover and linking up existing woods will create a much-needed habitat for many UK species which are being squeezed into an ever-smaller area of wilderness. ....
