Thousands of plants and animals unique to the world s most stunning places could face extinction if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, a new study finds.
But while New Zealand has the highest proportion of endemic species of any country - half of those in our marine environment, along with more than 80 per cent of native and freshwater species, are found nowhere else - the country may not fare as badly as places closer to the equator. ....

The season for potentially violent street protests is upon us, sparked by the latest police shooting of a black man in a suburb of Minneapolis.
Officers in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, pulled over a car because it had an expired registration tag. They discovered the driver, Daunte Wright, 20, also had an outstanding warrant, reportedly for carrying a gun without a permit and running away from police last June. Wright resisted arrest and wriggled back into his car to flee. As police tried to subdue him, one officer yelled, “Taser, Taser!” but instead, the chief of police said, that officer accidently pulled the trigger on her service revolver. The wounded Wright sped away, and minutes later, he was dead. ....

(Natural News)
When it comes to biodiversity, the waters around the equator have long been miles ahead of most of the rest of the planet. The tropical waters are known for their rich and varied marine life, with creatures ranging from vibrant coral reefs, whale sharks and sea turtles to tropical tuna and manta rays.
Unfortunately, its reign appears to be coming to a close as scientists report a mass exodus of marine species from the area, and everyone on the planet could end up paying the price.
Researchers from the Universities of Queensland, Auckland and the Sunshine Coast are sounding the alarm bell about rising water temperatures in the areas surrounding the equator, which is causing species to head for cooler waters toward the polar regions in both directions. ....

Asteroid that wiped out dinosaurs may have created the Amazon rainforest, study suggests

Science, the study also posits that the same asteroid created all of the Americas’ tropical rainforests.
Around 66 million years ago, a seven-mile-wide meteor struck what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Named the Chicxulub impactor, the meteor produced clouds of dust and ash and catapulted fragments of rock into the sky, triggering widespread wildfires.
Over time, the devastating impact drove the extinction of around 75 percent of all plant and animal species on the planet, including all terrestrial dinosaurs. The disaster also drastically changed the environment across the globe.
But its effect on tropical forests is less clear compared to temperate ecosystems. ....
