EVA HAMRUD, METAFACT 13 MARCH 2021 After 400,000 years of roaming Europe and Asia, Neanderthals disappeared. Why this happened is a contentious topic amongst experts. It is possible that our ancestors may have directly or indirectly contributed to this extinction, but the extent of our role remains to be determined.
Our distant cousins, the Neanderthals, lived for around 400,000 years in Europe and some parts of Asia. From 80,000 years ago, their populations began to decrease, and, eventually, they disappeared 50,000 years later. Our species, Homo sapiens, evolved in Africa around 200,000 years ago. Around the time that the Neanderthal populations were decreasing, H. sapiens began leaving the African continent and populating Asia and Europe. ....
Date Time Share Green Party call on Fisheries NZ and DOC to do better to stop by-kill of our precious NZ seabirds Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand The Green Party can reveal that in 2019/2020, more seabirds were reported as killed by fishing than the previous four years. Figures of increased reported seabird deaths came from answers by Te Papa Atawhai/the Department of Conservation to select committee questions as part of the 2019/20 annual review process. “Aotearoa New Zealand is the seabird capital of the world with 145 seabird species using our waters and 95 species breeding here more than anywhere else. These magnificent seabirds should be thriving at sea and on land. Actual seabird deaths from by-catch in 2019/20 are likely to be higher than the 1020 reported because not all boats have observers,” Green Party spokesperson for Oceans & Fisheries Eugenie Sage says. ....
Gregg Clemmer Vandalized with paint and foul language by those who seek to remove it, Leeâs statue is walled from all, pending a court decision. Seeing this, I have to shake my head at those who do not know our history. Yes, Lee, in his modesty, requested no such remembrance. Yet 20 years after his death, Virginia dedicated this statue to his memory for future generations to learn from and as a way for the South to heal. The victorious North had no objections, realizing this was a solid way to continue âbinding up the nationâs wounds.â Yet, there is one aspect in this dissension that has not been addressed. And I would suggest it is the single most important legacy bequeathed to us by Robert Edward Lee. ....
