The FCC released the agenda for its next Commission Open Meeting, scheduled for June 17, 2021. The meeting will first consider a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (“NPRM”) and Notice of Inquiry (“NOI”) to broaden the secured communications supply chain beyond the FCC’s universal service programs. Specifically, the NPRM would propose to prohibit all future authorizations for equipment on the FCC’s Covered List, revoke current equipment authorizations for equipment on the Covered List, and require certifications from future FCC auction participants that they will not rely on financial support from any entities designated as a national security threat. The FCC also tees up a Report and Order that would allow for expanded marketing and importation of radiofrequency devices prior to certification, with certain conditions to prohibit sale or operation of those devices prior to authorization. Tuesday, March 16th will be an important day. This is when the Statewide Tornado Drill will occur. The N.W.S. will issue “Test” Tornado Warnings between 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM Eastern Time.
Outdoor warnings sirens will go off. TV test crawls will come across your television. And all N.O.A.A. Hazardous Weather Radios and all Emergency Alert Systems or E.A.S. will sound.
This test is very important to make sure all systems are ready for severe weather.
This test may be postponed to Wednesday, March 15th if weather conditions warrant it. ....

Hacker claims he gained access to U.S., Canadian Emergency Alert Systems

According to
Input, a hacker with the pseudonym ‘virtrux’ (previously ‘j3ws3r’) said he gained access by scanning for ports utilized by two systems commonly used in emergency alerts. In doing so, virtrux found millions of IP addresses, which he scanned through for keywords likely used in such alert systems. That further narrowed down the list to thousands.
From there, virtrux says he “social engineered some manufacturers of these [systems] to give me either the service password or the default password.” Social engineering is a tactic used by hackers to manipulate users into divulging credentials or other secure data. After trying a few IPs, virtrux said he gained access. ....
