Second round of funds $61M across the state aims to help prevent homelessness

HOUSTON – There’s a new source of help for people facing homelessness due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs has announced more than $61 million has been awarded to approximately 50 organizations statewide to assist people experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness.
Here are the steps outlined on that page:
STEP 1: Select the type of help you need – This includes reduced-rent apartments, home repair and accessibility modifications, long-term rent payment help, utility bill payment help, emergency and homeless services, weatherization, help buying a home and homebuyer education and counseling, as well as a number of other resources. ....

To avoid staying at a homeless shelter, Kristie Filippello and her three children have been sleeping on the floor of a relative s one bedroom apartment for nearly two months.
Filippello, 32, left her home after the pandemic caused her housecleaning business to go under and the financial stress of unpaid bills led to abuse from her boyfriend of two years with whom she lived.
With nowhere to go, she and her kids, 6,8 and 11, spent two months at a homeless shelter in Florida before moving to Cincinnati to stay with relatives after getting relocation money from a domestic violence victim s compensation fund in October. ....

With more than 100 homeless people currently living outside, city leaders have voted to create a temporary winter shelter program that uses hotels, and they’ve also approved additional funding to allow the program to house more people than initially proposed.
As part of its meeting Tuesday, the Lawrence City Commission voted unanimously to approve a city-led program that will use hotel rooms to provide shelter to homeless people over the next 90 days. Under the initial proposal for the program, however, dozens of people would still have been left unsheltered, so the commission also voted to allocate an additional $50,000 to the program so that it could help more people. ....
