THE DA wants the Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Maite Nkoana-Mashabane to account for the government’s slow response to the fight against gender-based violence and femicide in the country.
The call was made after the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) issued a damning report that more that 60% of the government’s targets in its Emergency Response Action Plan (ERAP) to deal with gender-based violence and femicide has not been reached.
DA deputy spokesperson on women, youth and persons with disabilities Nazley Sharif said the fact that out of 81 targets, only 17 were met and 12 partially achieved, leaving 51 (63.75%) targets unmet, was shameful. ....

Two-thirds of the targets set out in a government plan to address gender-based violence were not met, according to a report.
The report by the Commission for Gender Equality assessed the six-month Emergency Response Action Plan s implementation.
The report called for a government review of the plan s implementation.
More than 60% of the targets set out in the government s Emergency Response Action Plan (ERAP) on gender-based violence and femicide were not achieved.
According to a report by the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), the government did not achieve 51 of the 80 targets set out in the ERAP. The ERAP was a six-month intervention rolled out by the government in October 2019, which aimed to address rising cases of gender-based violence and femicide. ....

The fund in question is aimed at aiding victims of GBV and femicide.
Its establishment stems from the GBV Summit held in 2018 where multiple sectors were encouraged to band together and make contributions towards ending the scourge faced by many women and young girls in South Africa.
It also follows the Emergency Response Action Plan on Gender-based Violence and Femicide that was implemented between October 2019 and March 2020 and covered areas of intervention such as access to justice for victims and survivors, changing norms and behaviours through high-level prevention efforts, as well as empowering women towards economic emancipation. ....
