Ontario confirms first blood clot death in man who received AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine

Health officials in Ontario have recorded the first death of a person with a rare blood clot who received a dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in April.
Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe confirmed the news during the province’s bi-weekly update on its COVID-19 response Tuesday.
“Unfortunately, I must report that we now in Ontario have our first death associated with VITT (vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia),” Yaffe said.
She said the man in his 40s received his first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine “toward the end of April” and died a “few weeks later.” ....

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott provided an update on Ontario’s COVID-19 vaccine roll-out Wednesday afternoon.

Ontario residents aged 40 and older are now able to book their COVID-19 vaccination appointments through Ontario’s online booking system.
“Ontario continues to rapidly accelerate its COVID-19 vaccine roll-out and get more shots into arms,” said Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott during a virtual announcement on May 12. ....

Ontario will no longer offer first doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine after an increase in reports of blood clots associated with the shot.
Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams, made the announcement Tuesday afternoon. The vaccine was being offered to anyone over the age of 40 at pharmacies across Ontario.
“It is not that the risk for individuals has gone up extensively at this time, but because it is sometimes severe, we want to be cautious and say ‘let s pause it’ while we look at the data and information,” said Williams. ....
