For shooting victims, time is precious. But some end up at a hospital that can't save them. | Local News

There was little time to spare after 17-year-old Griffin Weathers was shot in the chest in 2018.
He was losing blood fast, and needed surgery to have any chance of survival.
An ambulance rushed Weathers the 10 minutes to nearby High Point Medical Center. It’s the closest hospital and the place where paramedics are supposed to take patients with immediately life-threatening injuries.
But High Point Medical Center was not really equipped to save the teenager’s life. It is not a designated trauma center and does not have the doctors, surgeons and anesthesiologists that come with that designation. So shooting victims like Weathers often need to be transferred to another hospital for surgery. ....

Bills To Expand State Crisis Intervention Pass Senate

Credit UPR
On Monday, the Utah Senate passed three bills that would develop and expand the state’s crisis intervention teams.
Republican Senator Daniel Thatcher from West Valley City sponsored Senate Bill 53, which would allow members of the Emergency Medical Service to be certified in behavioral health training. Sen. Thatcher said while Mobile Crisis Outreach Team intervention proves successful in mitigating harm in a mental or behavioral health crisis, there aren’t enough members to cover the need.

“Those Mobile Crisis Outreach Teams are staffed with licensed clinical social workers,” Thatcher said. “And when they are available to respond to a call, there’s a 75% chance that the individual is stabilized and sent home. The problem is, we will never have enough MCOT teams to get to every single behavioral call.” ....

Council tables emergency services contract - The Ellsworth American

Council tables emergency services contract
ELLSWORTH Citing “no progress” in negotiations with Northern Light Medical Transport prior to a scheduled Jan. 21 Emergency Medical Services Committee meeting, interim City Manager Glenn Moshier told the City Council on Jan. 11 that he was “hopeful we can bring it back to the next council meeting.”
The EMS Committee last met on Dec. 15, when Moshier recommended a three-year contract that met with reluctant approval from its members. The issue was tabled at the Dec. 21 council meeting because of a lengthy agenda.
The Northern Light-operated ambulance service surprised the city with a request for a service contract last year, as an existing agreement to house NLMT personnel in the Fire Department has provided Ellsworth with ambulance service at no cost since 2018. That agreement ends in August. ....

City ambulances negotiations continue - The Ellsworth American

City ambulances negotiations continue
ELLSWORTH A recommendation by interim City Manager Glenn Mosher to contract with Northern Light Medical Transport (NLMT) for three years of ambulance service met with reluctant approval when the Emergency Medical Services Committee met on Dec. 15. Committee members also plan to recommend to councilors that the city begin taking steps to form its own ambulance service. The City Council meets Monday, Dec. 21, and the EMS contract is on the agenda.
Moshier, councilors Robert Miller, Michelle Kaplan and John Phillips, Fire Chief Richard Tupper and Deputy Fire Chief Gary Saunders discussed a new offer from NLMT, which continued to work with Moshier on contract terms after its initial $9.40 per-capita cost for a service contract met with “a less than warm reception from the Finance Committee,” Moshier said. ....
