Union says employer putting telehealth workers at risk during COVID surge

The union that represents telehealth workers staffing the 811 system in Nova Scotia says the company that runs it is putting members at risk by refusing to let them work remotely during the current COVID-19 outbreak.
We have a lot of Nova Scotians and others who rely on the telehealth system and we cannot have a breakdown in the system, said Jason MacLean, the president of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union. ....

A new report investigating ambulance service in Nova Scotia finds they are spending a significant amount of time waiting in emergency departments to off-load patients.
Fitch and Associates released the long-delayed report on Monday and it contains 68 recommendations in total – 64 of which have already been implemented and built into a new collective agreement.
The firm also points out that ambulances are often tied up responding to requests to transfer patients between facilities. Fitch classifies these tasks as non-emergencies and lead to situations where ambulance coverage is stretched thin in the province.
A social media page run by the union representing paramedics has gained attention over its Code Critical hashtag and has been tracking ambulance shortages in the province. ....

Report on N.S. ambulance service says delays caused by offloading wait times

A report into Nova Scotia s privately operated ambulance service says a significant amount of ambulance time is exhausted by unproductive non-emergency activities.
The report by Fitch and Associates released Monday says ambulances spend a considerable amount of time waiting in hospitals to offload patients into busy emergency departments. The U.S.-based consulting firm also notes ambulances are often tied up responding to requests to transfer patients between facilities, a task it says could be handled by other transport options.
Resources that could be dedicated to emergency responses are unnecessarily deployed to the (inter-facility transport) system to meet the contract demands, the report said. This is inefficient and ineffective. ....
