SCOTTISH Borders Council has issued a statement after it was announced that the coronavirus lockdown will be extended. Current lockdown restrictions had been due to be removed at the end of January for the Borders, as well as the rest of mainland Scotland. However, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today (January 19) announced that the lockdown – which has seen non-essential shops close, and home-working the default position – will be extended until “at least the middle of February”. Regarding the extension, council leader Shona Haslam said: It is clear that COVID-19 is still too prevalent in our communities so we need to stick with the lockdown restrictions for a bit longer. ....
Health officials have once again urged people in the Scottish Borders to stay at home - as the region continues to see steep rises in confirmed case numbers of Covid-19. The number of patients requiring hospital admission who have tested positive for, or are presumed to have Covid-19, doubled last week compared to the week prior. NHS Borders has confirmed that many of these cases are the new variant strain of the virus, which is highly contagious. The Scottish Government earlier published data showing that there were 2,013 confirmed positive cases of Covid-19 in the Borders since 7 March 2020, marking an increase of 508 cases since Wednesday 30 December 2020. ....
NHS Borders has issued a warning about the new strain of coronavirus. In a press statement at 11.54am today (Monday, December 21), the region’s health board said “everyone must be aware” that it is “possible” the new strain of the virus is in the Borders. A spokesperson for NHS Borders said “further detailed testing is required to confirm whether or not there have been cases of the new variant of coronavirus in the Scottish Borders”.
