Singer Anup Bhattacharya dies at 77

Freedom fighter and Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra musician Anup Bhattacharya has died in a Dhaka hospital at the age of 77.

He was declared dead by the doctors after being taken to Asgar Ali Hospital in Dhaka around 7:30 pm on Thursday, the musician’s niece Pushpita Bhattacharya said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her shock over the death of the musician, who was also one of the founding members of the Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha.
‘People will remember his contributions to music with respect,” Hasina said in her condolence message, praying for the salvation of Anup s departed soul and expressing sympathy for his bereaved family members. ....

Covid Surge: ICU beds to double in Dhaka

The government has decided to double the number of Intensive Care Unit beds in Dhaka to accommodate the surge of Covid-19 patients.
We are working to double the [number of] ICU beds in Dhaka hospitals within seven to 10 days, Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), told The Daily Star yesterday.
The decision to ramp up the ICU facilities, as well as general beds, in both public and private hospitals came after a meeting yesterday between the DGHS and the hospital officials.
The meeting was aimed at assessing the current situation and devising the next course of action, said Khurshid Alam. ....
