The rocket start-up Astra plans to go public, the company announced Tuesday, raising $500 million to bolster its position in the burgeoning market for space transportation.
In a deal valued at $2.1 billion, Astra would become the first publicly traded company dedicated to delivering satellites into Earth’s orbit. The Alameda, Calif.-based rocket-maker intends to go public through a merger with a blank-check company, or what’s known as a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), which acts as a financial vehicle to bypass the traditional IPO process. ....

The long-awaited Covid-19 vaccine arrives in SA today to give the country its first shot of hope in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic.
One million doses of the Astra-Zeneca Covid-19 vaccine left India on an Emirates Airline yesterday destined for OR Tambo International Airport to mark SA’s first milestone in the national roll-out of the vaccine. Health minister Zweli Mkhize described today’s arrival of the vaccine as a mark of “a new chapter – one of anticipation, hope and possibility”.

Astra 'Ecstatic' over Successful Rocket Launch


Small launch vehicle startup, Astra, has joined the ranks of companies sending vehicles up into space. The California startup launched its second orbital flight yesterday, Wednesday 15 December, just before 16:00 PM EST from the Pacific Spaceport Complex on Kodiak Island in Alaska.
The company s Rocket 3.2 passed the Kármán line, which is the point that most consider the barrier between Earth s atmosphere and space. 
Astra didn t share a live stream video of the iconic moment, but its team shared regular updates on its Twitter page.

On its second test flight Tuesday, Astra’s privately-developed small satellite launcher ran out of fuel seconds before reaching the velocity needed to enter orbit but exceeded the company’s expectations with an otherwise-successful climb into space from Kodiak Island, Alaska.
Astra officials said Tuesday the rocket “performed flawlessly” for roughly eight minutes, successfully demonstrating the launcher’s first stage burn, stage separation, payload fairing jettison, and second stage ignition milestones on the ascent into space. ....
