Teachers unions support switch to virtual learning until educators are vaccinated

The temporary halting of in-person learning in Peel Region is getting the thumbs up from the province’s teachers unions.
President of the Elementary Teachers Federation (ETFO) Sam Hammond says the “prudent decision” will protect students and educators and support health care workers.
However, the union still wants to see all schools in hot spots closed to in-person learning until teachers are vaccinated. ....

Catholic Board Mourns Vice-Chair

Vice-Chair of the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board Loretta Fonso has passed away.
The board says it’s announcing her death earlier this afternoon with “heavy hearts and severe shock.”
Fonso, who also served as a Trustee, taught with the board for over 30 years and was Past President of the local secondary school unit of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association.
Board officials are sending their condolences to her family.
“A Board wide communication will follow, commemorating the life of our friend, Loretta,” a statement from the board reads. ....

Students, teachers still waiting on back-to-school date

Students and teachers in southern Ontario are still waiting to find out if they will return to the classroom on Jan. 25.
Aakanksha Mandal, who is Grade 10, hopes her exams in a few weeks will be in-person. She said the last time she took an exam online, she had challenges while asking her teacher a question.
She took too long and I couldn t finish my exam on time, Mandal said.
The province announced last month that students outside of COVID-19 hotspots would return to in-person learning on Jan. 25, but some now think that might now happen.
Everybody I talk to is assuming that we re not going back, said Patrick Etmanski, president of the local branch of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association. ....
