China offers help with Samoan bodies awaiting autopsies
The backlog of deceased awaiting autopsies in Samoa may soon get relief with an offer of assistance from the Chinese Embassy.
The
Samoa Observer newspaper reported some 18 bodies, including those of children, were lying at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole National Hospital mortuary waiting for autopsies to be performed.
Samoa does not have a resident pathologist and relied on those seconded from Australia and New Zealand.
However due to Covid-19 border closures this had not happened.
An Embassy spokesperson said they fully understood the situation and China was willing to provide support after further discussions. ....

New funding round for Pacific education

Pacific Education will be the big winner of another funding round announced by the Associate Minister of Education, Aupito William Sio today.
“It’s great to make available another 12 million dollars to communities, providers and educators looking to develop solutions for Pacific learners and families through the Pacific Education Support Fund and Innovation Funds. I am excited that already more than 330 applications totalling 23.3 million were applied for last year and it looks like the next round will be just as big.
“I encourage our Pacific providers, community based-organisations, churches, schools, families and groups to submit applications for round two funding to support the needs of our aiga and their families. ....

Covid-19: 35.5 million hours of early childhood education lost due to virus

One reason for this could have been a change in economic circumstances due to Covid, the ministry’s chief economist Andrew Webber wrote in a report released with the data.
“Job loss could cause a reduction in ECE participation of children for two reasons: firstly, the loss of income may make some forms of ECE more difficult to afford; and secondly, it may free up the time of parents to enable them to care for their own children during the day.”

Low participation rates disproportionately affected Auckland and ECEs drawing from low socio-economic areas.
Pasifika children appear to have experienced the largest barriers to ECE participation due to Covid-19, mirroring the trend in schools, where attendance rates in Pasifika students took longer to recover after lockdown compared to their Asian, Pākehā and Māori counterparts. ....
