Oxford University to keep Cecil Rhodes statue despite recommendation to remove it


An independent commission has recommended a statue of British imperialist Cecil Rhodes be removed from the grounds of an Oxford University college.
Oxford s Oriel College has however said it will not be removed due to the costs it would incur.
The commission was set up last year to examine the memorials and legacy of Cecil Rhodes as calls around the UK grew to remove statues of controversial historical statues following anti-racism protests sparked by the death of George Floyd in the US.
Oriel College recommended then that the statue be removed.
The commission backed the proposal by Oriel College s Governing Body to remove the statue in its report released Thursday. ....

Thousands of volunteers will receive a booster COVID-19 vaccine in a new clinical trial launched yesterday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced.
The Cov-Boost study, led by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and backed by £19.3 million of government funding through the Vaccines Taskforce, will trial seven vaccines and will be the first in the world to provide vital data on the impact of a third dose on patients’ immune responses. ....

COVID-19 surge: Bihar, U.P., Delhi top list of deaths among doctors in second wave, says IMA


“While last year we lost nearly 730 doctors across India, this year in a short period of time we have lost 244 doctors. The second wave is proving extremely fatal for all and especially those at the forefront of the battle. We have to actively increase vaccination cover among the medical staff to ensure that they have protection against the virus,’’ said IMA president J.A. Jayalal.

An observational study conducted by Delhi s Indraprastha Apollo Hospital has found that over 97 per cent of fully vaccinated people were protected from COVID-19 infection and the chances of hospitalisation after vaccination were only 0.06 per cent.
