On April 8, 2021, the Pulitzer Center education team was in conversation with Teacher Fellows Jairus Hallums and Nikysha Gilliam. Jairus and Nikysha shared how they leverage global, underreported news stories to foster student inquiry around representation, identity, and community, and tips for navigating these themes in your own classroom.
Gilliam is a native of Pontiac, Michigan, and a high school educator. A graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in English, and a masters in educational administration from California State University, Northridge, Gilliam is a former Fulbright Fellow and a current doctoral student at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. She has been teaching for 23 years and this year teaches ninth and tenth-grade English and English Language Development. Dr. Jim McKean, OHIO Chillicothe Associate Professor of Law Enforcement, was recently awarded an RHE Workforce Success Initiative grant. Dr. McKean proposed a project titled the Southern Ohio Public Safety Workforce Development Training. The project’s goal was “to initiate a model of public safety workforce development training utilizing available instructional resources from Ohio University Chillicothe to meet the needs of local law enforcement officers in our service region.”
New initiatives to improve workforce opportunities in the Appalachian region have been made possible thanks to a new project spearheaded by the Executive Dean for OHIO Regional Higher Education (RHE). ....

Mira Costa educator receives National Geographic fellowship

Mira Costa High School Educator Michael Hernandez was recently honored with a 2021 Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship, which will allow him to explore a faraway land with other educators and bring that knowledge back to his students and colleagues.
The Fellowship (GTF) is a partnership between Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society and is geared to help the 50 chosen from hundreds of candidates from around the United States and Canada to bring âgeographic awarenessâ back from their exploration.
âThe idea behind it is to send us on an expedition to have the experience of what it s like to be a National Geographic Explorer, and to take that experience both before during and after to develop curriculum that we can bring back to our students at school, and also to share with other teachers around the world,â Hernandez said. ....

Washington Island student, Door County teachers win Kohl Foundation awards
MILWAUKEE - A Washington Island High School senior and two Door County teachers won awards from the Herb Kohl Foundation.
Julia Valentincic of Washington Island received a $10,000 Student Initiative Scholarship to be received upon graduation this spring; and Jessica Meacham, a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) teacher at Southern Door Elementary School in Brussels, and Lisa Mueller, a first-grade teacher at St. John Bosco Catholic School in Sturgeon Bay, each were named for a Teacher Fellowship by the foundation, which carries a $6,000 award.
The Student Initiative Scholarship is offered to 100 high schools in Wisconsin every seven years, with Washington Island being chosen for this year. Recipients are chosen by their schools to recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and shown strong promise for succeeding in college and bey ....
