(Photo by Joshua Spaulding) ( click for larger version) March 10, 2021CONWAY The Division III hockey quarterfinal battle at the Ham Arena in Conway on Saturday was a battle worthy of playoff hockey, as the Kennett Eagles rallied from an early deficit to knock off the Belmont-Gilford Bulldogs by a 4-2 score, advancing Kennett to the Division III semifinals. The game saw the visitors jump out to a 1-0 lead after one quarter before Kennett scored three goals in the second quarter to take the lead and never look back. The Eagles were coming off a bye in the first round, which meant 10 days off, while the Bulldogs beat their Laconia rinkmates, Laconia-Winnisquam-Inter-Lakes earlier in the week.

While the Laconia-Winnisquam-Inter-Lakes Lakers, playing without two of their top players, got off to a hot start, it was the Belmont-Gilford Bulldogs who finished strong, rallying from a 3-1 first period deficit to pull off a 4-3 win to advance to the quarterfinal round.

The Lebanon-Stevens-Mount Royal boys hockey team finally opened its season on Thursday. The Raiders did just about everything but win. Despite an early two-goal lead and a 41-17 advantage in shots on goal, Lebanon dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Belmont-Gilford in an NHIAA Division III contest at Merrill Fay Arena. Eric Ellingson capped B-G’s comeback with the game-winning goal at 2:32 of the extra session. Even with the defeat, Lebanon coach Jim Damren professed himself pleased with the night. Will McGee and Andrew Duany accounted for the Raiders’ goals, and Toby Cromwell made 14 saves in the Lebanon net.
