CLITHERALL, Minn. Below Mount Pleasant Cemetery sits Otter Tail County’s first permanent settlement.
Established in 1865, the settlement became known as Clitherall. It was formed by a group who followed a man named Alpheus Cutler. He and his followers, called Cutlerites, splintered away from the Mormon church. ....

To win or play by the rules?: Great American Think-Off announces 2021 finalists


The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center announces four finalists from the essay contest portion of the Great American Think-Off. These four essayists each win $500 and a weekend trip to New York Mills in June to participate in the live philosophical debate.
During the debate, the finalists argue their side of the question, “Which is more important: to win or to play by the rules?” Two finalists will assert that winning is more important, while the other two finalists will argue that playing by the rules is more important.
The debate among the four armchair philosophers is on Saturday, June 12. The finalists will be available to meet the public at the Great American Think-Off Kick-Off event the evening of Friday, June 11 at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center during a philosophers and artists reception. In addition to honoring the Think-Off finalists, the reception will also feature regional visual artists on display in the gallery’s “Happine ....

The first 85: A look back at Black history in Fergus Falls


Prince Albert Honeycutt, a Black child hailing from Tennessee, relocated to Fergus Falls in 1872 with the military officer he served with during the Civil War. Honeycutt was the first Black person to make Fergus Falls his home, paving the way for the entry of the “First 85,” a group of 18 Black families who immigrated to Fergus Falls from Kentucky in 1897. This was the first large influx of Blacks to the Fergus Falls area. 
The First 85, composed of 60 men and 25 women, were drawn to the area seeking farm land, which was rumored to be plentiful. Many of the men were Civil War veterans. After they arrived on the train, Honeycutt, who then owned a barber shop in downtown Fergus Falls, acted as a liaison to the families, helping them navigate their new community and secure employment and housing.  ....
