Birding: Maine Breeding Bird Atlas is hoping you can contribute

Birding: Maine Breeding Bird Atlas is hoping you can contribute
The Maine Breeding Bird Atlas, in the fourth year of a five-year mapping project, needs more volunteers to help in every corner of the state.

The fourth year of the Maine Breeding Bird Atlas is off and running. This five-year project will provide an accurate mapping of the distribution of all the breeding birds in Maine and a baseline for future projects to assess changes in bird distribution. Furthermore, it will provide a valuable comparison with the first survey conducted from 1978 through 1983.
For the current atlas project, the state is partitioned into over 4,8oo blocks, each a 2.9-by-2.9-mile squares. To complete a block, a minimum of 15 hours is required along with solid evidence of nesting for 60% of the species.

Local birders count more species than ever in annual survey

Bird-lover and local Audubon Christmas Bird Count coordinator Colin Boeh spent the snowy, foggy morning of Jan. 2 driving around his route with his wife Mary Chris, a two-and-a-half-year-old, and a newborn, frequently wiping off the steamy windows of the truck and not seeing a single bird.
“If you had asked me at 11 a.m. on count day if we were going to see a record number of species, I’d have said ‘no way,’” he later said with a laugh.
The Boehs went snowshoeing in Teton Canyon in the afternoon with much greater success, even spotting the golden eagle couple that appears to have made a home on some cliff face deep in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness.

Add two swans to the tally! Sitka’s annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count kicked off on January 2 (KCAW/Snider)
Jennifer Cedarleaf and Victoria Vosburg organize and run the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count in Sitka (and have done so for the last 14 years!). This year’s count was January 2. Cedarleaf and Vosburg joined KCAW’s Robert Woolsey for the Morning Interview to discuss their findings. Listen here:
A Brambling is among the more unsual birds in this year’s Sitka count. But it’s a reliable report: This bird had been seen around town for a couple of months before the January 2 count. (Victoria Vosburg photo)

Unprecedented Rollback of Bird Protections Cemented in Administrations Final Days

Take Action
(WASHINGTON) “The Trump administration is kicking off the new year and its remaining weeks by finalizing its illegal bird-killer policy,” said Sarah Greenberger, senior vice president for conservation policy, National Audubon Society. “This brazen effort will most certainly be in vain as the administration already found out in court that it can’t unilaterally gut the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and its obligation to protect and conserve birds.
Today the Department of the Interior released its Record of Decision (ROD) in the last step to strip away critical protections in the  Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) . The effort has received widespread and bipartisan opposition including from members of Congress, more than 25 states, numerous tribal governments, scientists, sportsmen, birdwatchers, and 250,000 people who submitted comments opposing the proposed rule change. In August, a  federal court invalidated the policy  that serves as the legal foundation for the regulatory effort, for which the administration is seeking  an appeal .

“The Best of Me”
by David Sedaris: For more than 25 years, David Sedaris has been carving out a unique literary space, virtually creating his own genre. A Sedaris story may seem confessional but also is highly attuned to the world outside. It opens our eyes to what is at once absurd and moving about our daily existence. It is almost impossible to read without laughing. Now, for the first time collected in one volume, the author brings us his funniest and most memorable work.
