Contributing Writer Photos by Garry Brandenburg Bison are one of North America’s biggest and charismatic creatures of our prairie grassland heritage. It is hard to imagine the vast herds estimated to once be over 50 million animals scattered across the grassland prairies of our lower 48 states. But they did exist once upon a time..until settlement moved west and eliminated many of these mammals. Thanks to far a few far sighted people, remnant herds became the focus for conservation efforts. My images today feature a small portion of a bison herd at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge near Valentine, Nebraska. At their visitor center, a replica skull with long horn cores is on display for the extinct giant bison, Bison latifrons. And for comparison, at Green Castle is our modern day bison that local folks can go see. ....
Contributing Writer Photos by Garry Brandenburg Turkey time is time to check out all the gear the hunter may need for upcoming turkey hunting times. This author simulates a bow shot at a tom turkey without the advantage of pop-up blind. Rest assured that a blind, or full cam head to toe clothing, is essential to avoid detection by this wary gamebird. Another tactic this author will try this spring is a bow mounted turkey silhouette which is attached to my bow with long Velcro straps. This method may work. It will be fun trying. GOBBLING TURKEYS may be one of the neatest sounds a hunter wants to hear Monday morning, April 12th, the beginning of season one for Iowa’s big wild and hard to get game bird. Last year Iowa hunters of wild turkeys killed 14,671 bearded birds. Marshall County hunters took about 115 turkeys with shotgun or bow. About one in five hunters takes a wild turkey home. Four out of five tried and had a great time, just no turkey harvest photos t ....

Contributing Writer Photos by Garry Brandenburg Last weeks super cold weather and new snow were just another day for wildlife. Today’s images show a group of Trumpeter Swans, adults and two young from last year, resting in a snow covered corn field west of Albion. And in the far background, those dark spots at timber edge are ten wild turkeys. While the swans were just waiting our the weather, turkeys were scratching through the snow cover to attempt to uncover tidbits of grain from last years harvest. As snow cover melts this week, the soil layers will become exposed allowing wildlife to find food more easily. A winter thawing weather break is welcome. ....
Contributing Writer Photo by Garry Brandenburg Bald Eagle pairs are busy with eagle nesting duties. The time line started last fall with pair bonding. Now in mid February a nest site has likely already been selected, a new nest built, or a former nest remodeled, to prepare for mating and egg laying later this month. Egg laying can happen at the end of February. Eaglets hatch in late March or early April. There are approximately a dozen known eagle nests in Marshall County going into 2021. EAGLE NEST WATCHING by people may be a later winter activity for some folks. Congratulations if you are one of those people inspired by this annual wildlife renewal story being played out near you. If you know where to look, an active eagle nest is not too far away from wherever you live. Observe from a distance with binoculars or a spotting scope. Enjoy your eagle observation forays. ....
