Car Dealers Clash After Govt Directive Takes Effect

Car dealers in Kenya have clashed after a government relief of vehicle importation took effect beginning January 1, 2021.
A report by
People Daily on Wednesday, January 13, indicated that two associations have differed after the state allowed cars older than eight years to be imported into the country.
Car Importers Association of Kenya (CIAK) praised the move noting that it would help traders avert losses from imported cars that had already been ordered but delayed landing in Mombasa due to Covid-19 lockdown.
CIAK Chairman Peter Otieno, while speaking to the press, observed that the pandemic affected the imports of the cars whose deadline had been set for December 31, 2020. ....

Kenya Auto Bazaar Association (Kaba) claims that none of their members had written to the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) seeking a waiver due to delays on processing shipping documents.
On Monday, Kebs said it is looking at the possibility of allowing importation of 2013 vehicles whose shipping to Kenya was delayed by Covid-related challenges that have hit supply lines globally.
Kaba chairman John Kipchumba said that the association’s members had been forced to replace the cheaper 2013 vehicle models in favour of the costlier 2014 models, where some paid up to Sh 1 million more. ....
