County committee says no weapons at work


A Rutherford County committee is recommending no changes to a policy that prohibits county employees from carrying firearms on the job even if they have a state-issued permit, unless they are a deputy.
An ad hoc committee of the Rutherford County Commission on Jan. 15 voted for the second time to recommend leaving the policy alone. The recommendation was sent to the Steering, Legislative & Governmental Committee, which was scheduled to meet Monday night.
Employees may keep a firearm in their personal vehicle’s trunk, officials said, citing state law.
The ad hoc committee had previously met and gave the same recommendation on Nov. 13. The commission decided to repeat the meeting because a group of citizens and the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government had expressed concern about details of the public meeting notice. They said that advertisement did not provide the purpose of the meeting or the action to be taken, which are requirements by law. ....

County will hold meeting about firearms again


The Steering, Legislative & Governmental Committee met Jan. 4.
One action taken was a unanimous vote to hold a new meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee to discuss whether to allow county workers who have firearms carry permits to carry while on the job.
A group of county residents and advocates challenged the Nov. 13 meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee meeting over public notice concerns. The committee’s stated purpose was to decide on the concealed carry issue and make a recommendation to the steering committee. County policy does not allow a worker to carry a firearm unless that is part of his or her job (i.e., a deputy). Otherwise, the workers could keep their firearm only in their vehicle’s trunk under state law. ....
