Stars: 2/5 How is it that a 90âs era crime thriller written and directed by John Lee Hancock (who worked on hits like The Founder and The Blind Side ) and starring Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto can be so painstakingly boring and unconvincing as a movie? The answer? Forgetting the little things that matter when making a movie. Originally written by Hancock in 1993 for Steven Spielberg to direct, The Little Things revolves around seasoned deputy sheriff Joe âDekeâ Deacon (Washington) who teams up with Jim Baxter (Malek), a up and coming LAPD detective, to solve a recent string of serial murders. As Deke wrestles with a dark secret from his past, the duo believes their prime suspect to be ever-creepy loner, Albert Sparma (Leto). ....

Director John Lee Hancock is notable for feel good biographical dramas like The Blind Side and Saving Mr. Banks but takes a different route in his latest film, the serial killer psychological drama The Little Things. Hancock has been trying to make the movie for about 30 years and while he insists he wrote the script before Seven, this still feels like a limp wristed Seven clone. Still, the trio of main actors in Things elevates the proceedings. For a serial killer movie, it doesn’t really have many big scares. It settles on being vaguely unsettling and has a different ending that may be aiming for morally ambiguous and subversive but mostly just comes off as somewhat unsatisfying. The Little Things has short bursts when the creepiness does feel creepy although other times it just feels like a generic murder procedural but with higher caliber actors than on network TV. ....
Highlander Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures Following the Christmas release of âWonder Woman 1984,â Warner Bros. announced its new pandemic strategy â their 2021 film lineup would be released simultaneously in select theaters and on its HBO Max streaming service for the first 30 days of the filmâs release. First up on that list is the crime thriller led by Denzel Washington and Rami Malek, âThe Little Things.â The film follows former Los Angeles (LA) police detective Joe Deacon (Denzel Washington), now a Kern County sheriff, as he is sent to LA to gather some forensic evidence for a case. While in LA, pieces of Deaconâs checkered past are drudged up as he eventually agrees to help lead detective Jimmy Baxter (Rami Malek) solve a murder investigation similar to one from his past. ....
Writer-director John Lee Hancock has been pointing out in interviews that he wrote the screenplay for “The Little Things” in 1993. That explains the period setting for the film, which takes place at a time before DNA usage was prevalent in tracking serial killers. But Hancock also might be stressing that date because it means he wrote it two years before “Se7en” was released. “The Little Things,” which opens in theaters and premieres on HBO Max on Friday, has more than a few surface similarities with the 1995 David Fincher film. Both involve a world-weary older black cop working a serial killer case with a younger, hotshot detective. The suspected serial killer seems to enjoy toying with the detectives and has either surveilled or at least researched the younger detective’s family / home life. ....
