One year later: Philadelphia commemorates George Floyd's legacy

George Floyd should be alive with his family today and it’s incumbent on all of us to keep his memory alive, Mayor Jim Kenney said, according to CBS3. His death represented the countless Black Americans tragically killed by police, and it catalyzed a long overdue reckoning about systemic racism in this country. This week, I urge all Philadelphians to reflect on the tremendous legacy he leaves behind and on how we can continue to work together to enact police reform and dismantle institutional racism.
Boathouse Row, the FMC tower, Citizens Bank Park, Lincoln Financial Field, the Wells Fargo Center and other buildings will be lit up in gold to honor Floyd and all victims of police brutality Tuesday evening.  ....

Ask a Black therapist: 4 ways to support Black people's mental health

“There is a difference between being informed and getting retraumatized.”
That’s what clinical therapist Paul Bashea Williams tells himself and his clients as they struggle with the distressing images that resurfaced during the Derek Chauvin trial.
The proceeding churned up a persistent trauma. The frequent replay of George Floyd’s final moments may have left many feeling raw, vulnerable and without relief.

“Sometimes you are visualizing you,” says Williams, lead clinician and owner of Hearts in Mind Counseling in Prince George and Montgomery counties in Maryland. Ninety percent of his clients identify as Black. ....

'Black Men Heal' ramps up free therapy program — WHYY

Therapist Tasnim Sulaiman, 40, who founded Black Men Heal in 2018 after 5 years in private practice, started by finding pro-bono slots in her schedule for Black men who couldn’t afford traditional therapy.
Sulaiman had been passionate about spurring change and transformation among men in the Black community, but few Black men were coming to her practice. She came to feel that the health care system wasn’t set up for that population to succeed and didn’t like her part in it.
“It didn’t really feel great,” she said. “It felt conflicting and I felt very complicit in a very broken system.” ....
