A note from the editor

Sharon Fisher This year it seems like it’s been one dam issue after another. (Yes, we’re 12.) In fact, this issue has not just one but two dam articles. One is about the plan to make Anderson Ranch Dam six feet taller so that it can store more water, and the other is the Cat Creek project, which is intended to provide power through pumped storage, solar and wind facilities. Both of those articles were written by our intrepid reporter Catie Clark. Both articles are also part of our Focus section this week on Construction, always one of our most popular topics. Other articles in that section this week include the rental space that is being advertised for lease as part of the Idaho Wheat Commission’s new building in downtown Boise, even though the building itself hasn’t been built yet, also written by Catie. There’s also a new wing for the Portneuf Medical Center.   We’ve been following the saga of the Expo Idaho facility for some time, and our cover story this week is th ....

Water Resource Board and Bureau of Reclamation to work on project design as next step for 6-foot raise of Anderson Ranch Dam
Tuesday, June 1, 2021
BOISE -(May 25, 2021) –The Idaho Water Resource Board and Bureau of Reclamation discussed a proposal on Friday to delay federal environmental approval for the proposed 6-foot raise of Anderson Ranch Dam to allow for completion of additional analysis needed to address critical questions about project construction. The discussion occurred during the regular May bimonthly meeting of the Idaho Water Resource Board. The project will stay on track to meet federal WIIN Act requirements which require a cost-share agreement between Reclamation and a partner(s)capable of funding the non-federal project costs as well as initiation of project final design by December 16, 2021, officials said. ....

Wild trout and wildfire – monitoring trout populations in the South Fork Boise River after largescale landscape disturbances

NAMPA — The South Fork of the Boise River downstream from Anderson Ranch Dam is a nationally-renowned tailwater trout fishery and was the first river section in the Idaho Department Fish and Game’s Southwest Region to be managed as a trophy trout fishery. Known for its trophy Rainbow Trout and Mountain Whitefish, the South Fork is also home to some quality Bull Trout. One of the more unique features of this fishery is that it consists of two recreationally distinct sections. A popular roaded section (~ 16 km) runs from Anderson Ranch Dam downstream to Danskin Bridge and is popular for both drift boat and wade fishing while a canyon section (~ 27 km) runs from Danskin Bridge downstream to Neal Bridge. With extremely limited access by foot or road because of high canyon walls, this canyon section is accessible mostly by raft due to varying levels of whitewater. This diverse habitat and opportunity only adds to the popularity of this fishery. ....

Anderson Ranch Dam
The Idaho Water Resource Board reviewed the critical actions needed to move forward with a 6-foot raise of Anderson Ranch Dam in its January meeting, and in one of the necessary steps, it hired a financial consultant to help with financing the non-federal portion of the $83 million projects, officials said Monday.
In its briefing to the Board, Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) officials said two critical milestones have been met. First, the Secretary of Interior determined that the dam raise is feasible. Secondly, Congress passed the Fiscal Year 2021 Appropriations bill, which secured $12.88 million in funding for the project. ....
