ANN ARBOR, Mich. – With hot, humid days and rainy nights, Ann Arbor is right in the middle of the dog days of summer.
Maybe you snapped some cool shots during Art Fair, took celebratory selfies at an Ann Arbor Summer Festival concert or tested your photography skills while canoeing down Huron River. Whatever it is, we want to see how you have celebrated summer in Tree Town.
Winners will be featured in an article, in one of Meredith’s Tuesday newsletters and will have bragging rights for the rest of the summer.

Artist Spotlight: Dani Darling
Name: Dani Darling
Sound: Pop, soul and jazz. Darling says she's influenced by artists like Erykah Badu and Radiohead, as well as old Hollywood movie scores.
The latest: The Ann Arbor-based singer, songwriter, producer and musician has been working on her third EP "The Future." The project is in collaboration with a fellowship from the Amplify Project. The fellowship supports musicians with recording and engineering costs in exchange for their volunteer service to local nonprofits. She recorded "The Future" on New Year's Eve at Grove Studios in Ypsilanti and it hits streaming services June 25.

Remember what it was like being legitimately busy? Well, you’re about to. Since 1984, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival has championed the performing arts via a four-week festival starting in June that offers concerts, art exhibitions, family-friendly activities, dance performances, and film screenings — and this summer is no different. Well, OK, this summer is a bit different, with the fest offering a variety of in-person and digital events throughout the U-M campus and neighboring parks. This year’s A2SF schedule includes pop-up neighborhood concerts, movies at Fuller Park, a theater installation that accommodates one audience member at a time, a community-based Indian dance event, and three ticketed live-outdoor fundraising concerts featuring Kishi Bashi, the Laith Al-Saadi Trio, and the War and Treaty. Additionally, folks can reserve private concerts from a number of participating performers. As for online events, this year’s A2SF will include the premiere of Theater in Quarantine, an interactive performance by Brooklyn-based 600 HIGHWAYMEN, and the second season of the A2SF podcast Stories from the Top. Events are in-person and online, times and dates vary; a2sf.org. Tickets vary.

The Ann Arbor Summer Festival (A2SF) announces a mix of new, in-person, and digital events that kick off on June 11. A2SF’s season anchor this year is a pop-up concert series
Live Here Now presented by Toyota and will take place in public parks and spaces throughout Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. A2SF is engaging a diverse group of community partners throughout the two cities and presenting many in partnership with the Ann Arbor District Library (AADL) this summer.

A THOUSAND WAYS (PART TWO): AN ENCOUNTER to Have New York Premiere Live at The Public Theater

The Public Theater announced today the New York premiere of A THOUSAND WAYS (PART TWO): AN ENCOUNTER, inviting audiences to take part-in-person-in the continuation of this acclaimed work from 600 HIGHWAYMEN (Abigail Browde and Michael Silverstone). While the first part engaged two remote participants-often thousands of miles apart-in an automated hour-long phone call, PART TWO: AN ENCOUNTER brings together new pairs of strangers to share physical space in the creation of a private piece of theater. Seated in an empty room, at opposite ends of a table, and separated by a pane of plexiglass, participants follow prompts on a set of notecards, venturing together into cinematically vivid bouts of imagination. The experience invites us to reconsider, in real time, what we think we know about a person-including ourselves-at a moment when virtual interactions have flattened our co-existences. A THOUSAND WAYS (PART TWO): AN ENCOUNTER will take place in several locations at The Public Theater, beginning on Tuesday, June 8, and will run through Sunday, August 15.

U-M's first COVID patient reflects; Howard Big Ten Coach of the Year; Summer Fest 2021 plans

I hope you’ve been enjoying the beautiful weather these past few days. Thank you for reading.
This week marked one year since Michigan’s first coronavirus cases were confirmed. It’s hard to believe that much time has passed. Remember when people thought life would only be interrupted for a month or two?
Here in Ann Arbor, Michigan Medicine began treating patients right as cases were detected. One of those first cases was Paul DeWyse -- U-M’s first official COVID patient. In a recent interview with the health system, he recalls turning on the TV in his isolation room and seeing news reporters gathered outside the hospital talking about his case. He said he is grateful to be alive, having received a double lung transplant in 2018. Watch that interview here.
