Environmental Business Column: DEC's successful women's initiative | Top Stories


While Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Randall Young usually takes the lead on this column, he has handed it over to me this month to highlight DEC’s successful Women’s Initiative. The initiative started three years ago after a group of women brought the idea to DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos, who encouraged its creation as a way to provide new opportunities for professional growth and to foster career development for women in the agency.
Outcomes of the initiative include providing opportunities for the women of the DEC to connect with colleagues statewide through mentoring opportunities and a speakers’ series in which DEC staff participate as panelists on a variety of topics. These events are usually held during lunch hours and if staff can’t attend, the sessions are recorded to view at a later date. ....

Southern Trust Physiotherapists the first in Northern Ireland to write prescriptions for patients | Latest Newry News, Newry Sport and Newry Business for Newry City


 
 
It aims to help reduce waiting times for medication and free up GP appointments for those who need them most.
In the first phase, physiotherapists working with patients who have Lymphoedema, can prescribe medication or garments where appropriate, for example, if the prescription is needed urgently or if the items are complex.
It is planned to extend the service in the new year, to include Orthopaedic ICATS and also Community Respiratory Physiotherapy, which could potentially support recovering Covid-19 patients when discharged from hospital. 
Carmel Harney Assistant Director, for Allied Health Professions at the Southern Trust explains, “With around one-third of GP appointments relating to physiotherapy issues, there are huge benefits for the profession working more closely with primary care colleagues. ....
