New COVID-19 grant program will benefit hospitality industry


A new grant program in Bedford County will benefit hospitality businesses that have been negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The COVID-19 Hospitality Industry Recovery Program (CHIRP), which was recently passed by the state Legislature, will allocate $547,000 to Bedford County. The funding is part of the $145 million that will be distributed statewide, with county allocations based on population.
“We’re very pleased to offer this program to our hospitality businesses,” the county commissioners said in a joint statement. “The industry has been devastated by the pandemic. Since the legislation was passed in early February, we have been diligently working access these monies and launch the application process.” ....

Economic development in the region was another victim of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
Starting in March, the staff and board members of the Altoona Blair County Development Corp. could only react to the crisis, managing emergency grant programs, forgiving loans, deferring rents and referring unemployment claims, said President and CEO Stephen McKnight.
Nevertheless, in 2020, ABCD Corp. facilitated 52 business financing projects that represented nearly $17 million in total capital investment and nearly $6.3 million in program funding. These projects led to the creation of 25 new jobs and retention of 210, McKnight said. ....
