NZ Police Drone Data Could be Accessed by Beijing: Report

NZ Police Drone Data Could be Accessed by Beijing: Report
China-made drones deployed by New Zealand police potentially are potential backdoors for Beijing’s surveillance efforts, according to a recent report.
New Zealand’s police force currently carries a fleet of 26 drones, which are used for photographing crime scenes, traffic accidents, and surveillance.
The company behind the drones is Da Jiang Innovations (DJI), a Chinese technology firm that accounts for 70 percent of the world’s drone market.
In 2017, the U.S. armed forces issued warnings to discourage the use of DJI products, while the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces have adopted similar precautions. ....

The main report also highlighted the hotchpotch nature of police digital systems, that it said must improve to store drone data that might be used in court.
Police drones are at risk of the data they gather ending up in cloud servers the Chinese government can access, but this can be managed, and the benefits outweigh the risks.
That is the conclusion in reports on police trials of drones released under the Official Information Act (OIA).
An internet-connected [drone] could send data to a server located in China, and firmware updates could compromise the integrity of the [drone] and any police systems to which it is connected, said the main 96-page report on the trial. ....

buy a couple of much more expensive - and much more data-secure - drones approved by the US military
consider putting a small, cheap drone in every [patrol] car
A West Coast policeman with a drone in his car took high-resolution photos of a big slip on a state highway in major floods in late 2019.
Getting a handle on emergencies like this, and on crime scenes and road crashes, are among the drone pluses the reports outline.
A significant hurdle is that there are a wide range of circumstances where police could be guilty of trespass surveillance in the air above private property (although fewer than one in 10 flights in the six-month trial in 2019-20 was for surveillance, and this was targeted, not general surveillance). ....

Joshua Lanigan and Jeanine Hughes accused of selling meth to OD victim

MAPLE SHADE – Two township residents are accused of supplying the methamphetamine that caused a Medford man’s fatal overdose.
Joshua Lanigan, 39, and Jeanine Hughes, 44, are charged with strict liability for drug-induced death in connection with a deadly incident last year, said the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.
The overdose victim, 38-year-old Andrew Shelley, was found dead March 18 by a hiker in a wooded area off Route 70 in Medford, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
Shelley’ family had reported him missing on Feb. 18, it said.
An obituary described Shelley as someone who loved being by the ocean and out in the wilderness, fishing, boating, riding bikes, traveling, and spending time with his family. ....
