UNIONS urged shoppers to help keep workers safe as many non-essential stores reopened in England today.
The TUC and retail union Usdaw caled for respect for staff as shops, hairdressers, pub beer gardens and pavement cafes began to trade again. 
Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked the nation to “behave responsibly,” with indoor gyms, swimming pools, nail salons and zoos also welcoming customers as lockdown restrictions ease.
Usdaw warned that the pandemic had seen a shocking rise in violence against staff, with incidents often occurring when workers encourage customers to follow Covid-19 safety rules.
The union’s 2020 shopworker survey found that 88 per cent had experienced verbal abuse and 9 per cent had even been assaulted, while the vast majority said the issue had worsened over the past year. ....

Boris Johnson says Government is working 'flat out' to counter Covid outbreak at DVLA offices


Boris Johnson today vowed the Government is working flat-out after a Covid outbreak at the DVLA headquarters.
More than 500 cases have been identified at the driving agency s offices in Swansea between September and December last year, after bosses allegedly told staff with symptoms to return to work.
It is thought to be Britain s biggest workplace outbreak and has increased pressure on ministers, with critics claiming they have failed to protect workers. 
The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) has said claims staff with symptoms were told to work are categorically untrue .
The organisation also denied that staff were told to turn-off their NHS track and trace apps. ....

The civil service’s biggest union has urged ministers to intervene after a mass coronavirus outbreak at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency’s Swansea headquarters left staff afraid to work there.
More than five hundred workers at the DVLA office have contracted Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, making it the UK’s biggest reported employee outbreak of coronavirus.
Some 1,800 of the HQ’s 6,000 staff are being told to work from the office, which deals with driving licence applications and vehicle tax renewals. ....

Ministers are at the centre of an explosive row over their failure to protect workers from Covid-19 as the
Observer reveals the largest workplace outbreak of the virus has taken place at a top government organisation.
More than 500 cases have been recorded at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency’s offices in Swansea, where employees claim people with symptoms were encouraged to return to work while vulnerable workers have had requests to work from home turned down.
The revelation places the transport secretary, Grant Shapps, under pressure to explain how such an outbreak could have happened in an agency where the strictest workplace rules are supposed to apply. ....
