Swine Spectacular tests youth on pig knowledge

IPPA May 04, 2021 Youth with a passion for pigs put their knowledge to the test during the eighth-annual Swine Spectacular, presented by the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA). The educational event was held in conjunction with the Iowa State University Block & Bridle Club and Alpha Gamma Rho Spring Spectacular, a hog show sanctioned by the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series. “Swine Spectacular is designed for young people to show off what they know about the pork industry, but it also incorporates production and industry perspectives,” said Hannah Spurr, IPPA’s consumer outreach director. “No matter if they live on a pig farm or not, we hope participants always walk away learning something new.”

Staff / WGLT Unlike most city and town council races Tuesday, township races were partisan. And in contests for Normal Township trustee, voters elected two Democrats and two Republicans. Democrats Sally Pyne and Arlene Hosea won, as did Republicans Floyd Aper and Art Rodriguez. Pyne and Hosea were the top two vote getters. Democrats Dayna Schickedanz and Mary Wuhrman and Republican Carl Haney were not elected. A write-in campaign by longtime Normal Trustee Ray Ropp has apparently not succeeded, though more write in votes could be tallied overnight. Ropp was taken off the ballot after others protested his failure to file disclosure forms.

Cody Mickel Conklin

A celebration of life service will be announced in the spring. Cody was born Jan. 10, 1996, in Owosso and graduated from Corunna High School, class of 2014, where he played football and loved his Corunna wrestling family. Cody loved being outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was employed as an electrician and was a hard worker who took pride in his work. Cody was active in Corunna FFA and also looked forward to spending time with family and attending rodeos and bull riding. Cody is survived by his parents, Clay and Amy Conklin; sister and brother Kyleigh and Collin, and Aaron (Megan) Mead; sister Eryn; grandparents Larry and Tracy Jones, Beth Hubbert, Dave and Donna Conklin, and Janet Mead; aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving family members; and friends.
