Among the last-minute items debated Tuesday was the inclusion of a Human Resources position that would be tasked with developing a workforce representative of the demographics of the city, one of the main recommendations stemming from the Equity and Diversity Committee earlier this year.

Read Article LEWISTON Officials are seeking feedback on developing an equity statement for the Twin Cities, an initiative meant to re-establish the work of the City SPIRIT council that formed in 2018 to address conflict and inequity. The council is a collaboration of city, school and community leaders from Lewiston and Auburn, which is now turning its focus on continuing the work of Lewiston’s Equity and Diversity Committee. It will host a virtual discussion Friday to solicit feedback on the statement, which according to its website will “provide a common foundation and commitment to the healing of inequality and provide space and opportunity for truly equitable approaches for all community members to flourish.”

Portland’s Martin Luther King Day observance moves online The 40th annual community event hosted by the NAACP will include two dozen sessions featuring a variety of speakers. Share For 40 years, the NAACP in Maine has hosted a community event to honor the legacy of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The tradition will continue this year with a day-long virtual celebration. The observance is the largest held in Maine and traditionally features a gospel concert, interfaith community dialogue, youth program and a dinner. This year, the celebration is a virtual teach-in and call-to-action that will include about two dozen sessions featuring speakers from across Maine and from a variety of organizations.
