Getting vaccinated may be everyone s best protection against COVID-19. But giving everyone fair access to vaccines will take more than just providing needles and vials, community health experts say.
Vaccines have not been reaching everyone equally, statistics show. Overall, Black and Hispanic people have been receiving smaller shares of vaccinations relative to their population and their portion of COVID-19 cases and deaths, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis from mid-April. Levels of disparity vary by region, but overall, white people have received a disproportionately high number of vaccines. Asian people in most states have received doses that tracked with their levels of cases and deaths. ....

Though the Latino community has taken the brunt of the pandemic in Orange County, the population only accounts for 12% of the people who have received at least one vaccine dose in the county.
There have been concerns that the county hasn’t adequately included underserved communities in its vaccine distribution plans, which focus on mass sites called Super PODs at Disneyland, Soka University and the soon-to-be site at the Anaheim Convention Center.
According to state data, the Latino population makes up about 35% of the county’s population but accounts for 49% of the county’s COVID-19 cases.
White people account for about 28% of the county’s COVID-19 cases, yet make up 48% of the recipients of at least one dose of a vaccine in the county, according to county data. ....

Commentary: Reaching out to vulnerable populations about COVID-19 vaccinations

With COVID-19 vaccination efforts underway in Orange County, hope runs high that the pandemic will soon end and life will return to normal. But for the 25% of Orange County residents who are low-income Medi-Cal recipients, hope may be tempered by a level of distrust in the vaccine and hindered by other socioeconomic barriers that keep them from pursuing vaccination.
Allowing this population of 800,000 to stay on the sidelines is simply not an option. CalOptima, Orange County’s Medi-Cal plan, and the Orange County Health Care Agency (HCA) are collaborating to launch an equity program, raise awareness and build vaccine acceptance in certain ethnic groups, vulnerable populations and cities disproportionately affected by COVID-19. ....
