TimesOC: Orange County mobilizes to catch killer of 6-year-old boy

Good morning and welcome to the TimesOC newsletter.
It’s Friday, May 28. I’m Ben Brazil, bringing you the latest roundup of Orange County news and events.
The county has spent the last week collectively reeling from the killing of a 6-year-old boy.
Aiden Leos was shot to death last Friday on the 55 Freeway in Orange while being driven to kindergarten by his mother in what has been described as a road rage incident.
With Leos’ killer still on the loose, the county has mobilized to offer a reward of $310,000 to anyone who offers information that leads to the arrest of the shooter. Orange County Supervisors Don Wagner and Katrina Foley have donated $50,000 each from their offices’ budgets to the effort. Reporter Faith Pinho wrote that an anonymous donor has provided another $50,000, and several Orange County businesses have also donated. ....

U.S. Marine Corps jets and helicopters could return to the decommissioned Marine Corps Air Station El Toro following an agreement inked by the Irvine City Council on Tuesday.
The Flying Leathernecks Historical Foundation has proposed refurbishing a 215,000-square-foot hangar at Orange County Great Park into a new home for its aviation museum currently on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. In March, Marine officials permanently shuttered the museum after reallocating more than $460,000 annually spent on its operation toward higher-priority missions. ....

Irvine’s decades-long fight to stop the expansion of the controversial James A. Musick jail is not over yet.
The Irvine City Council voted Tuesday night to put pressure on the county Board of Supervisors to hold a public meeting on the issue. The board approved a $261-million construction contract for the expansion last year.
The item was proposed by Mayor Farrah Khan and Vice Mayor Tammy Kim at the urging of the Stop the Musick Coalition, a group of social justice organizations in Orange County working to halt the expansion. ....

In Irvine, Calif., the Orange County Great Park’s hot air balloon took flight for the first time in about 14 months.
“We’re very excited to be able to resume a flight on the balloon,” city spokesperson Kristina Perrigoue told The Epoch Times.
Residents eagerly waited on shady park benches to ride the balloon until it was their turn, including a family of four that was celebrating a 40th birthday.

Back for seconds? SoCal residents overdue for second COVID-19 shot

Back for seconds? SoCal residents overdue for second COVID-19 shot
Enthusiastic people lined up at the Orange County Great Park new mass vaccination site for their first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, most saying they’d be back for their second shot in four to six weeks.
However, not everyone is living to their promise to come back. According to a CDC report, up to five million people nationwide have skipped their second dose.
Health officials have their theories as to why this may be happening. Forgetting is one but more likely, they say, is that people are getting scared when hearing reports that the side effects can be more serious, even debilitating, after the second shot. ....
