As the Army works toward modernizing its air-and-missile defense capabilities, the service is expanding efforts to develop joint systems that will be key to winning future battles.
The technology is one of the top modernization priorities being spearheaded by Army Futures Command. As part of its effort to bolster its capability, the service is combining offices and testing technologies with the other armed services to converge and streamline the process of building and integrating new platforms.

US Army fields first IM-SHORAD to Germany

The US Army has begun fielding the new Initial Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense (IM-SHORAD) system and the first weapon is now in Ansbach, Germany with the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment.
Based around the Stryker A1 vehicle, the service announced the weapon fielding on 23 April and said it is part of a larger plan to field 144 systems to four battalions beginning this year.
IM-SHORAD is designed to down aerial threats such as unmanned aircraft systems, as well as rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft. In its current configuration, the vehicle includes Leonardo DRS’s mission equipment package with Moog’s Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform (RIwP) turret. The RIwP for this weapon includes a modified M299 launcher for two Longbow Hellfire missiles, a Raytheon Stinger Vehicle Universal Launcher (SVUL) to hold four surface-to-air missiles, Northrop Grumman’s XM914 3 ....
