COLORADO SPRINGS — While fireworks can be something fun for families, they re not enjoyed by all. For some veterans, the 4Th of July cause agony and stress.
Military veterans with PTSD, can struggle with the loud booms and lights of a firework show. These noises can even bring them back to the battlefield.
In severe case they ll hit the deck like they re back in Vietnam or the Gulf, explained Dr. Carl Folkner, a Veteran and Research Psychologist. Dr. Folkner explained to our news partner in Montana, what can often happen when a veteran is triggered by sights and sounds. ....

PHOENIX — Fireworks celebrations are a cause for just that, celebrating, but many military veterans are preparing for potential PTSD episodes.
The loud boom, flashing lights, even the smell of fireworks can mentally land a veteran back on the battlefield.
Smell serves as a pretty powerful trigger for memories and part of that is because it’s located just proximity-wise to the hippocampus, the memory center for the brain, said Kris Kratz, Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health for Veterans Affairs in Phoenix. In one particular case, we witnessed the detrimental psycho-social effects of bullying which can lead to suicide or children being unable to return to school.
