Archaeology: Prehistoric violence at Jebel Sahaba may not have been single event | Scientific Reports

Research Press Release
Scientific Reports
May 28, 2021
Reanalysis of the prehistoric cemetery Jebel Sahaba, Sudan, one of the earliest sites showing human warfare (13,400 years ago), suggests that hunter-fisher-gatherers engaged in repeated, smaller conflicts. The findings are published in
Scientific Reports. Healed trauma on the skeletons found in the cemetery indicates that individuals fought and survived several violent assaults, rather than fighting in one fatal event as previously thought.
Isabelle Crevecoeur, Daniel Antoine and colleagues reanalysed the skeletal remains of 61 individuals, who were originally excavated in the 1960s, using newly available microscopy techniques. The authors identified 106 previously undocumented lesions and traumas, and were able to distinguish between projectile injuries (from arrows or spears), trauma (from close combat), and traces associated with natural decay. They found 41 individuals (67%) buried in Jebel Sahaba had ....

NIMH » Investigating Unintentional Injury as a Risk Factor for Self-Harm

Research Highlight: Investigating Unintentional Injury as a Risk Factor for Self-Harm
Each year, adolescents go to emergency departments for both unintentional injury and deliberate self-harm. However, determining whether an adolescent’s accidental injury had suicidal or self-harm intent has long been recognized as a challenge. A better understanding of the association between unintentional injury and deliberate self-harm could inform and aid prevention and intervention efforts.
Past studies have found associations between having any nonfatal unintentional injury and risk of later self-harm. In a recent NIH-supported study, researchers investigated whether distinct subtypes of unintentional injury or how the injury happened have stronger associations with risk of future self-harm than others in adolescents. Identifying which adolescents with unintentional injury might be at elevated risk for future deliberate self-harm could help with targeting clinical assessment and in ....

Human behaviour: The earliest deliberate burial by modern humans in Africa | Nature

Research Press Release
Nature
May 6, 2021
The deliberate burial of a young child, dated to around 78,000 years ago, in a cave in Kenya is the earliest known evidence of funerary internment by modern humans in Africa. The discovery, reported in
Nature this week, offers new insight into how these populations treated their dead.
Investigations of the evolution of modern human behaviour often focus on the Middle Stone Age of Africa (spanning from about 280,000 to 25,000 years ago), but evidence is scarce for formal burials an important component of this evolution in Africa at this time. María Martinón-Torres and colleagues describe a partial skeleton of a 2.5–3-year-old child, with dental features that are consistent with an assignment to Homo sapiens, recovered from Middle Stone Age layers at Panga ya Saidi, a cave site near the coast of Kenya. ....
