Report commissioned to weigh up options for NI vet school

A report to analyse the best options for establishing a vet school within the region has been commissioned by Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
It’s the first formal step towards establishing a veterinary school within Northern Ireland, despite the proposal being bandied about for several years.
Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots commented: “I have been concerned for some time that Northern Ireland may not attract sufficient veterinary surgeons to meet the needs of the local agri-food industry in the future, and I have been keen that my department continues to explore options for a more secure supply of vets for Northern Ireland on a longer-term basis. ....

Ulster University confirms transfer of Health Science courses to Magee
The relocation will bring over 800 undergraduate students to the Magee campus in courses such as physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and radiotherapy

Ulster University has confirmed that the School of Health Sciences undergraduate programmes will relocate to its Magee campus in Derry from September 2022. 
The relocation will bring over 800 undergraduate students to the Magee campus.
Postgraduate Health Sciences teaching will move to the University’s Belfast campus at the same time.
Announcing the relocation decision, Professor Carol Curran, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences at Ulster University explained: “Now, more than ever, in the context of a health service that continues to face sustained challenge in tackling COVID-19, we are acutely aware of the vital contribution of our allied health professionals.  ....

New psychological model predicts who panic-buys during times of crisis

Drawing on animal-foraging theory, a new model predicts psychological factors that may lead to panic buying during times of crisis. The model is largely supported by real-world data from the COVID-19 pandemic. Richard Bentall of the University of Sheffield, England, and colleagues presented these findings in the open-access journal
PLOS ONE on January 27.
In the early stages of the pandemic, consumers in several countries around the world engaged in panic buying of household items, causing temporary shortages of toilet rolls and other products. Such behavior is typical during times of crisis, but few studies have examined the psychology of crisis-driven over-purchasing. ....
