TPS Board Approves Students' Return To Schools Next Week

The Tulsa Public Schools Board on Tuesday night narrowly approved bringing students back in-person starting next week.
Fourth, fifth and sixth graders; seventh graders at junior high schools; ninth graders; and tier three and four students with special needs will return Tuesday. Other students will return Thursday.
For the rest of the year, students will attend in person Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Wednesdays will remain distance learning days. Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist’s recommendation passed 4–3, with board members Judith Barba, Shawna Keller and Jennettie Marshall voting against it.
Gist says local infection rates are down, and while TPS can’t guarantee 6 feet of physical distancing at all times as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, the district is taking other steps, like requiring masks, setting up a testing program, and installing air filtration and scrubber systems that exceed CDC standards. ....

Health Officials Say FEMA Mass Vaccination Site Could Be Coming To Tulsa County

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
Tulsa County could be the site of a new mass vaccination site for individuals to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, according to local, state and federal officials.
Tulsa County will soon be the site of a mega POD [point of distribution], in partnership with state and federal officials, which will further increase access to vaccine, Tulsa Health Department Executive Director Dr. Bruce Dart said at a Thursday press briefing held virtually. That POD will have a goal of at least 6,000 vaccines administered per day.
The planning is underway right now, said Dart. We re in the process of selecting a site. We don t have a timeframe for when it will actually start. We have a meeting Monday, and hopefully that timetable will be solidified on that day. ....

Tulsa Health Dept., Caring Van Team Up To Increase COVID-19 Vaccine Accessibility
The Tulsa Health Department announced it is partnering with the Oklahoma Caring Foundation to increase COVID-19 Vaccine accessibility for minority community members.
Officials said the mobile Caring Vans will offer the COVID-19 vaccine at “several local churches and community centers serving predominantly minority residents.”
The health department said it will provide the vaccines for the mobile clinics, “which will serve 80-120 individuals at each location.”
Tulsa Health Department Executive Director Dr. Bruce Dart said they are glad to partner with the Oklahoma Caring Foundation to distribute the vaccine. ....

State Calling For Volunteers, With And Without Medical Training, To Help With Vaccination Effort

The Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corps put out a call for volunteers Wednesday, seeking nurses, paramedics and untrained community volunteers to help with the statewide COVID-19 vaccination effort.
We really do need a lot of people, and we need them all across the state, said Lezlie Carter, OKMRC state coordinator. In the larger metro areas and cities, but also in the more rural counties where we re getting the vaccine out to every Oklahoman. We need Oklahomans to join the OKMRC in all corners of the state to help us out with these efforts.
Carter said the corps, which is overseen by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, is seeking help in at least 52 of Oklahoma s 77 counties, and not just from health care providers who can administer the vaccine. ....
